Introduction from the Captain...

Mr. Graeme Thomson

Dear Fellow Members,

I'm delighted to inform you that your committee, along with the
assistance of the Club management, have begun the process of
creating an interactive website for members. Please note, it's
still in its infancy and will undoubtedly have the odd teething
issue while we seek to broaden its functionality.

At present it can be accessed at www.pinheirosaltos.com/golf-tournaments, and
allows you to register for forthcoming competitions.

Longer term, we envisage having a secure members access within
the Pinheiros Altos corporate website and hope to make this a
proactive members tool for the benefit of all.

It will certainly improve from active use and I would encourage
all members to review and provide feedback to the golf office so we
can understand what improvements and refinements are appropriate to
our membership.

Our AGM is rapidly approaching and accordingly my year as your
Captain is nearing its end. I will of course summarise my year at
the AGM, but as this newsletter will be my last, and in the certain
knowledge that not all members are able to attend, I would like to
record my appreciation to the membership for their generous support
throughout my year. I consider the community spirit to be alive and
well within PA and as your captain I've been privileged to be a
beneficiary during the 2013/14 season.

Rie Cherubini

This is my last report for the year 2013-2014.

A year ago Therese handed the captaincy over to me together with
a pressure to be the Lady Captain for the first time in my life,
right after such an experienced Captain. The first 2 months seemed
forever and the last 10 months passed with super turbo engine. I
repeat the same sentence over and over; I enjoyed every single
moment of the last 12 months.

It is all thanks to people around me: Christophe, Cristina, all
the golf staff, Jorge and his team, the Club Committee. At this
opportunity I would like to especially thank Graeme for his
tremendous support throughout the year, and to congratulate him not
only for his successful captaincy, but also for his miraculous
achievement to win two championships in his year (he must like
having partners though...), and let's not forget, he even managed
to win the Wooden Spoon!

Introduction from the Captain...

Mr. Graeme Thomson

The month of February is generally one of the quieter months in
our Club's active diary... it's the time of year when many of our
resident members head off on holidays to warmer climes and more
settled weather, in order to recharge their batteries (figuratively
speaking) for the year ahead.

Recently, however, we've introduced a couple of events for
February which have certainly sparked interest with the membership
and have been well supported.

The first - and now in its second year - is the reciprocal
social with Quinta do Lago. Which, despite the weather
intervention, is going from strength to strength, and I must thank
Iain Callaghan of PA and Mark Foot of QdL for all their additional
coordination on this occasion. Please see the Social update later in
this newsletter.

The second was our re-vamped St. Valentine's Tournament held
over two days and two courses: Pinheiros Altos & San Lorenzo,
with a very enjoyable dinner dance at the Dona Filipa Hotel.

Winning Partnership

The overall winning partnership were our Lady Captain and
Inter-Club Captain... Rie Cherubini and Christian Holst, who had an
exceptional second day on San Lorenzo.

The competition was a mixed 2 ball better-ball stableford on ¾
handicap, open to members and guests, and with the majority of
participants playing with their spouses it could have proved
fractious! 38 couples (partnerships) took part, of which 16
pairings were visiting guests resident in the Dona Filipa Hotel.
This arrangement proved highly beneficial and afforded the
membership the opportunity to play San Lorenzo on preferential
terms.

Generous Charity Work

I feel duty bound to thank not just the visiting guests, all of
whom thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have indicated an interest
in returning next year, but also to the many members who purposely
returned to the Algarve and supported this inaugural event. €1500
Euros was raised from the 'Buy a Mulligan' helium balloons for the
'Friends of Faro Cardiology' unit in Faro Hospital, and a further
€1527.77 Euros was raised for our Lady Captain's charities through
'Silent Auction' bids on two 4ball vouchers.

I wish to record my appreciation to the following members for
their generosity and assistance with this event: Ian Hepworth, Paul
Jervis, David Ford and David Markey, and also the successful
auction bidders: Mike Sharp, a recently new member who with his
wife Fiona will now be enjoying a visit to Woburn; and lastly Bob
and Sandi Beatson, who travelled from Vale da Pinta to participate
and
will shortly be visiting the KClub in Dublin.

Director of Golf:

Monthly Report

April 2014 was by far one the busiest months of golf, social
events and activities we've had for a long time. The very busy week
of Easter started with the ladies' AGM, when Rie Cherubini passed
her duty of Lady Captain to Adrienne Buth in great style with a
partial striptease for the 40 ladies present, and myself (someone
had to represent the company). Adrienne Buth went on to do her
drive-in which went exceptionally well.

Three days later, it was time for the Golf AGM, which had one of
the best attendance for many years, with over 120 members present
where Graeme Thomson introduced the new Pinheiros Altos Captain
David Pirret. One of the highlights of the AGM was the approval of
the new structure and Golf Club rules that are now in
operation.

The creation of the sub-committees (greens, house, social,
competitions/handicap and disciplinary) should help the
communication between members and the company. I would like to ask
all members to use the channels of the committee and its
sub-committees to give their suggestions regarding what can be
improved. This is so these matters can be discussed by the
committee and dealt with when possible.

<a

Ladies Section

Adrienne Buth

I was told that the ladies section is well organised, and it's
true. In April 2014, we had to confront all kind of weather
conditions and the 5 Wednesdays were organised by three different
Lady Captains. There were two committee meetings and the ladies
AGM, which were both busy, because many members chose to spend
their Easter holidays in the Algarve.

April's Ladies Medal literally fell in the water. It was a pity
because we had never seen so many ladies with a higher handicap on
the signup sheet. The competition was cancelled, but Zoë Pirret and
Helen Mills decided to play their final match for the Wainwright
trophy. Rie Cherubini accompanied them as referee. I heard that a
ball had disappeared in the bunker of the 1st of Corks, which was
full of water. Luckily, they managed to fish it out and find some
sand that wasn't closer to the hole. Well done to Helen, because
your name will be on the trophy; Congratulations!

Director of Golf:

Monthly Report

The month of May started with the annual trip to the K club,
which as usual was very enjoyable, and saw the level of Golf
affected by social activities. I would like to thank David and Mai
Markey, who once again hosted us brilliantly. Congratulations to
Orlando Hill who won the tournament over the three days to my
delight, as all my money was on him.

Congratulations to our Captain on winning the Ben Hogan
Challenge over Quinta do Lago and well done to the Ladies, as it
would not have happened without their great result on the first
day.

We had a good attendance for the Mixed Pairs Matchplay which saw
Phil and Nancy Schofield win the final from Chris Hales and Barbara
Kyne. It was great to see so many players staying and others coming
back for the prize presentation, which took place straight after
the final match finished. The trophy was originally presented by
Tim Russell, who made the trip especially to be here for the
ceremony.

On the 27th of May we started the Club Roll Up, which will be
played every Tuesday lunch time from now onwards, followed by
drinks and a presentation. We had 12 and 16 players for the first
two of these tournaments, and we are looking forward to seeing an
increase in participants, as it seems it might become very popular
amongst the membership.

Ladies Section:

Adrienne Buth

We started May with a friendly Matchplay vs Laranjal; what a
beautiful course! We played in the afternoon and enjoyed tapas
alongside Sharon Henderson's birthday cake afterwards. We won
3/2 - always a good start for the 10 friendly matches. I would like
to thank the group of 30 ladies who play regular friendly matches,
home and away, providing another way to meet other golfers and
discover new courses.

As it's always very nice to go home after an exotic holiday,
back at Pinheiros Altos we played a Medal, and finally had the
opportunity to hand in an Eclectic card on Wednesday the 7th.

Approximately 40 ladies are playing the Eclectic competition
this year, which runs over several months, from April until the
30th of September. Cathy Harper and Zoe Pirret are responsible for
running this competition and they will be glad to provide you with
more information.

Helen Mills (75 nett) and Barbara Black (78 nett) were the medal
winners of the first division, while Maried Kooijmans had a better
back nine and beat me with a score of 71 nett in the second
division.

On Monday May the 12th, after our FANTASTIC contribution to
regain the Ben Hogan Trophy, we went to Carvoeiero and played on
Pinta. We were welcomed by Mientje de Goeij alongside her team, and
though we did our best, they won 3/2.

Director of Golf:

Monthly Report

June felt a little bit like a marathon of golf and social
events, and the big winner was the Club as we witnessed some of the
best attendances in most of the tournaments. Hillbillies v
Sandancers was supported by 18 different sponsors, which have
always been very generous over the last 21 years of supporting this
event... and I would like to thank all the sponsors for making the
day such a special one. We had a record 88 players and 94 came for
the lunch, which was a very enjoyable afternoon.

Three days later Portuguese day saw another record, 100 players
battling it out for the bi-annual trophy; 50 from Portugal and 50
from the rest of the world. At the end of the contest, Portugal was
declared the victor. Unfortunately, I was not playing for Portugal
and lost my match on the last hole (I did not do it deliberately I
swear, I really wanted to beat José Gonçalves). António Nascimento
was the captain of the Portuguese team and very proudly received
the trophy, before thanking all members and the Pinheiros Altos for
their warm reception in the club.

Ladies Section:

Adrienne Buth

Holland did very well in June. No, I am not talking about
football, but about the Cloggies in Pinheiros Altos. Rie Cherubini
wrote about them in Alto News nr. 113. They were big news on Lady
Captain's Day and I owe them a lot for helping to make the 11th of
June 2014 a really big success! Thank you! The Cloggies were led by
three captains, a Norwegian: Knut Pedersen, an Englishman: Alan
Bentley and a Dutchman: Ronnie Goossens. Their Colonel / upper
chief, Michael Van Doorn was on holidays and quite upset when he
came home and heard about it.

46 ladies played for the lady Captain's bowl. David Pirret, our
captain and David Markey, our President, got up very early and were
the starters on the first tees of Pines and Corks. The dress code
for golf was orange.

The Cloggies were waiting at the end of the 7th of Pines and
beginning of 6th of Corks with refreshments, sandwiches and they
cleaned the ladies clubs with orange cloths!!!

I just can tell that the ladies were impressed and grateful,
their game was much better with clean clubs.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

July was a perfect month for golf, as the weather was mild and
cooler than usual, and the focal point of July was the highly
anticipated Gala Week.

Vernon & Denise Reed won the overall with a two-shot
advantage, despite all their social activities away from the golf.
They were delighted to win, after 12 years of playing in the Gala
Week. Congratulations to them both!

I would also like to point out the fantastic result of Tim
Russell and Rie Cherubini, who played eight over for the four
rounds of the Sunshine Classic Gala Week. Congratulations to Tony
Hickey on winning the monthly stableford event, and also to John
Scouler who won the Summer Medal prior to the Gala Week.

Both Gala dinners were a success, thanks to Jorge and his staff,
who served a very good meal at the Gala Dinner, which was followed
with dancing, and everyone there seem to enjoy themselves.

The month of August will already feel very quiet after such a
busy week, and I can't wait to organise another event.

Also, in this month's newsletter Christian Holst, the interclub
league captain, has written a summary of the team selection process
he uses to fulfil the mandate from the committee he has worked to
over the last three years.

Adrienne Buth

July was a quiet month away from the Gala. Wednesday the 2nd saw
a medal event take place. Winner Nancy Schofield and runner up Mai
Markey had scores of 75 and 77 nett respectively. Pat Murrish was
winner of the second division. While I was away the following week,
Cathy Harper organised a four ball better ball match play
competition. There were exactly 16 players and the drinks were
offered to the winners.

The 14th July saw the ladies from Benamor come to play. It was a
lovely morning followed by a delicious lunch of blanquette de veau
et poire au vin rouge. Nuno, once again, proved to be a very good
chef. We won the day's event. The stableford competition was won by
Zoë Pirret and Josie Waddington, of the first and second divisions.
Respectively. They both finished 37 points.

Away from the golf course, our charitable efforts continued,
when we arranged a food drive to help the Salvation Army of São
Brás to provide some children in the local area with breakfast
during the school holidays.

Christophe helped us with the posters to advertise the food
drive, and the staff of the reception and restaurant made sure
everyone knew about it. In just a few days we collected over 100
litres of milk, more than 60 boxes of breakfast cereals, lots of
other canned and dry foodstuffs, and cash donation totalling 85
euros.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

As expected, August was very calm after the storm, which gave us
time to look back on the success of Sunshine Classic Members Gala
Week.

On the 5th of August, we had our annual Junior Open, with 30
juniors taking part in a great day organized by our Pro Peter
Ashdown and sponsored by Mr. Malcolm Helder. Stella Jeffrey once
again won the August Stableford, while Graham Goodkind won the
August Medal.

September will start to be busier as golf season is now on the
way. Ensure your names are down for the Matchplay Championship in
mid-September and also for the Ryder Cup at the end of the month.
The 1st of October is another important date, with Pink Day open to
all members of the club and such a good cause to support.

A big thank you to Cathy Harper and Rie Cherubini for taking
care of the qualifying competitions during August.

We won the friendly match at Vila Sol and enjoyed their great
hospitability, with a lovely lunch on the terrace.

Four teams played Matchplay on the last Wednesday of August and
it felt like the hottest day of the month!

September will offer more possibilities to play golf.
Don't forget to sign up for the next events: Ladies
Invitation Day (17th of September), Pink Day (1st of October), the

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

The excitement of the Ryder Cup seemed to spill on to the PA
golf course this month with a number of exciting events taking
place. The usual Match Play Championship was very well attended,
and Tim Moores won the men's competitions, while Fiona Thomson won
the ladies competition.

To celebrate the bi-annual Ryder Cup competition, the Club held
its customary mini Ryder Cup. The USA took home the title, partly
thanks to the organised leadership of Melaura Parker and her vice
captains. The US team beat Europe by a comfortable ten points.

In other news, the annual Pink Day was a roaring success. Both
the ladies and men got into the spirit of the day and we raised
over €4500 for charity. Thanks to Shirley Griffiths for organising
the day and ensuring it was a great success.

Adrienne Buth

September was a very busy month on the golf course. On September
6th we played an enjoyable charity event at Laranjal, and the Match
Play Championship took place between the 12th and 14th
September.

The 17th September saw the much anticipated Ladies Invitation
Day. We invited visitors from England, Quinta da Ria, Carvoeiro,
Benamor and other places.

October is an even busier month we have to look forward to. In
particular, everyone is excited about the annual Wooden Spoon
competition between the men and the ladies, and the start of the
Wainwright Trophy, which is a knockout competition taking place
from October to March.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

October saw the Wooden Spoon being handed to the men for the
second year in a row followed by Lisa burns winning the Autumn
Medal Rosebowl with a fantastic score of 71 - well done and
congratulations on your new handicap!

It was the busiest month we have experienced for many years on
the golf course, which saw pace of play effected when the number of
players exceeded 300. Though the course's conditions have suffered
a lot over the last year, through the hard work of maintenance
staff there have been clear signs of improvement.

The Social Golf tournament celebrated 10 years, which as always
was very well supported and I would like to say thank you to all
the members involved in its organization.

I would also like to thank Jorge and his team for running the
restaurant over the past few years. From the 1st of November, the
catering of the main Clubhouse is being run by Lusotel and I am
glad that Jorge and almost all the team are staying on.

Future events that have now been confirmed include the 3rd
Algarvian Invitational for Seniors and a two day St Valentine
tournament. Keep an eye open for the Christmas board in the
Clubhouse so that you can sign up for the many tournaments during
the festive season, while our New Year's Eve party is not to be
missed!

Ladies Section

Adrienne Buth

I am very proud that despite heavy rain, the ladies have won
again and the men retained the Wooden Spoon. The competition was
first introduced by Therese van Doorn and Barbara Fletcher in 1998,
with the ladies winning in 2001, 2010, 2013 and now 2014!

In the medal competition for the eclectic prizes on the 8th of
October, Helen Mills won first prize with a nett score of 32 (back
nine) followed in second place by Susan Russell, who then went onto
win first prize on the qualifying Stableford on the 22nd of
October. We also played two friendly matches in October, the first
against the ladies from Vila Sol and the second versus Carvoeiro,
which we won 3/2.

We also had a Waltz the 15th of October, followed by singles
Matchplay on the last Wednesday of October, during which most
ladies had an interesting yet tough match.

Almost 40 attended the annual dinner, photographs of which
captured both the great atmosphere and how Jorge and his staff
excelled in creating a beautiful, tasty dinner. The highlight was
the presentation of the eclectic prizes - thank you to Cathy Harper
and Zoe Pirret!

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

While the golf schedule is beginning to slow down in the run up
to Christmas, there is still a lot to discuss in this month's
issue. Congratulations to Stuart and Leigh Anderson who won the
Foursomes Championship with an impressive score of 149 nett. A
congratulations is also in order for Rie Cherubini and Melaura
Parker, who won the November Medal and St Andrew's Stableford
respectively.

In other news, we hosted the third pro-am of this
year's series and managed to raise €3400 for the
ACCA. Thank you to everyone in the club for supporting
the charity this year, as it has helped many children
throughout the region.

The course will be quiet over the next few weeks, which
will allow it to recover from a very heavy season, as well as
allowing us to continue to improve the areas which need
it.

Finally, don't forget that the Christmas board is now up in the
clubhouse for all to sign up for many exciting events and
activities. We hope to see you all there.

Adrienne Buth

While we endured a very wet month, there were still a number of
competitions taking place in November.

Linda Bentley started the month winning her first Champus
glass, and Denise Reed (1st division) enjoyed a good score of 73
nett. There was also a very fun 'Four Clubs and a Putter'
competition, which Paula, Helen and their teams won with a
surprising 70 points. Finally, the Greensomes event was finished in
torrential conditions, and much-needed hot chocolates were served
in the club lounge.

Thank you all for your donations to the Salvation Army. Last
month, we collected three car loads full of linen, clothes and
other much-needed items for families in need.

Finally, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our
members!

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

December was a busy month with many Christmas competitions.
Thank you to Ross, Kenny and Roger for running the the roll ups,
the Turkey Flutter, which was won by Kathy Grimm, and the Boxing
Day, won by Tim Moores and Rainer Grimm. Florida Golf sponsored the
Eclectic competition, which was won by Declan Quilligan and Nancy
Schofield, while Hamish Rumball and Denise Reed were the Nett
winners of the competition. The New Year's Day Scramble was very
special this year with 155 players on the day and the "Brian Evans
New Year Scramble Trophy" was presented to the winning team: Kelvin
and Yvonne White, Chris Norman, Yarida Kapinpong and Shirley
Griffiths.

Congratulations go out to Jenny Harrison for her charity work,
as well as to the Greens Committee, Sesinando and the maintenance
staff, who are starting to see success with the condition of the
greens.

January is set to be a busy month, including the 3rd
Algarvian Invitational, which will be taking place from the
15th until the 18th of January 2015. I,
together with all the staff, would like to wish all the members of
Pinheiros Altos and their families a very Happy New Year!

As well as Christmas and New Year celebrations, congratulations
also went out to both Thérèse van Doorn and Vice Lady Captain Cathy
Harper for their hole-in-ones respectively! Well done again to
Cathy Harper and also to Shirley Lamb who won the Medal Glasses on
Wednesday the 3rd of December!

On the 10th of December we played "Hot Potato".
During prize giving, it was brought to our attention that there
were various interpretations of the rules and after listening to
all the comments, we decided to go with the scores that were on the
cards. I have promised myself to better check that rules are really
clear.

Seasonal fun was had on the 17th of December with a Stableford
competition. First prizes were won by Sally Ward and Pat Murrish
and I would like to thank Sue Georges for the delicious minced
pies, and Janet Leffler who organized the catering and prepared the
lovely prizes.

A Happy New Year to all - I hope that the good scores we have
had lately will continue!

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

The Algarvian Invitational Senior Tournament was organized as a
joint venture with Quinta do Lago, and played over four very
competitive rounds of golf this January. Andrew Oldcorn beat the
other 80 players to win €7,000, followed closely by José Romero.
Many thanks go to joint sponsors John Waters and Denis O'Brian, as
well as all staff involved in organizing the tournament. A special
thanks also goes out to the green staff, who, with the help of the
greens committee, have made a tremendous effort to recover the golf
course.

Winter Medal was won by Tim Russell with a 74, while
the January Stableford was won by our Lady Captain Adrienne Buth
with a score of 41 points. I am delighted that Knut Pedersen has
accepted to be the candidate nominated by the committee to be the
future Vice-Captain as from the next AGM, while Mai Markey will be
the Lady Vice-Captain.

In February, our main event is of course the St Valentine's
Trophy and I look forward to seeing many of you signing up for this
event. I wish you all a great start to the Golf Season!

January was a relatively quite month. Cathy Harper took care of
the Medal on Wednesday the 7th of January and Sue Georges had a
very good result of 72 points nett. Lisa Burns earned her Medal
Glass with her game and diplomacy with playing partners.

On the 14th of January, there were 26 players and
Hilary Jessup took her job as floater very seriously, with both her
teams ending on 69 points, achieving first and second places!
Thérèse van Doorn and Pat Murrish won the qualifying Stableford on
the 21st of January in the first and second division.

The 28th of January saw the match between the teams of

Griffiths was very proud to present the Ladies Foursomes
Championship trophy to Hilary Jessup and Sue Georges, while Sally
Evans captained the team that won with 75 points on
25th February, with Sandra Little and Ingrid Hollier.

Our Past Lady Captain, Rie Cherubini took care of the

Wednesday 23rd March, when the other ladies will play for the

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

It is hard to believe that we are already in April and that we
have just had another Members AGM! I would like to congratulate
David Pirret, the out-going Club Captain, and Adrienne Buth, the
out-going Lady Captain, on a very successful year, and welcome
Stewart and Cathy Harper as the in-coming Captains. A big thank you
to Graeme Thomson and Rie Cherubini, who are leaving the Golf
Committee this year, and congratulations to our President Mr. David
Markey on his first year in the chair.

There have been some changes to competition rules, which have
been outlined in the newsletter and we now have a finalized
programme for the Sunshine Classic Gala Week; the entry form for
which is also in the newsletter.

March saw the Men's Pairs Matchplay, which was won by Kelvin
White and Tony Hickey, while the Past Captain's Trophy was won by
Keith Fletcher with 37 points... and he also won the Spring Medal
played on the same day with a nett 71. The St. David's Medal was
won by Sally Evans, while Tony Hickey won the St. Patrick's Day
Stableford.

April will see the Strokeplay Championships and I wish you all
good golfing!

Cathy Harper

On the 30th of March, I "drove-in" as Lady Captain 2015... and
fortunately the drive was straight and fairly respectable. Zoë
Pirret and Rie Cherubini left the committee after three years hard
work, and we welcomed Sue Georges and Lisa Burns onto the
committee, and Helen Mills as a consultant member.

We thanked Adrienne Buth for an excellent year in office at our
AGM and it was also wonderful to present her and Shona Callaghan
with the Madrinha Trophy. The Nine Hole Competition was won
by Dee Hirst and Fiona Thomson, while Sally Evans won the
Wainwright Trophy. Meanwhile, Hilary Jessup triumphed over Denise
Reed in the Plate and the Medal was won by Sally Evans in the 1st
Division and by Lisa Burns in the 2nd.

Thank you for your support - may 2015 be a year of good golf and
good health for you all.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

April was a very busy month, starting with our usual Easter
Sunday Scramble and Easter Sunday BBQ. The big winners of the day
were Tony Hickey, Dan Henderson, Paul, Melody and Jamie Cotterill
with a 3,5 shot lead.

The following week saw the Club Stroke-Play Championship take
place and congratulations go to Dan Henderson with gross scores of
76 and 78 and Sally Evans with scores of 83 and 87. The APPA AGM,
dinner and golf tournament all took place on the 7th of April and
the latter was won by Bert Keuppens with 37 points. While the St
George's Day Stableford was won by Adrienne Buth and Tony
Hickey.

Jorge Afonso from catering has left Pinheiros Altos and I would
like to thank him for all of his hard work and dedication over the
last few years in running the club house. Rui Tomé will now be the
manager for catering at Pinheiros Altos and I wish him great
success in his new role.

May and June are also set to be very busy on the golf course,
with the mixed pairs Match-Play Championship for the Russell Salver
between the 21st and 24th of May, the first tournament of the
Portuguese Senior Golf Association South Region held at Pinheiros
Altos on the 28th of May and Captains Day on the 13th of June
2015.

I wish all members good golfing at Pinheiros Altos!

Cathy Harper

Though our second competition was rained off after 9 holes and
the following week rain stopped play completely, the weather
improved towards the end of the month. We played a qualifying
Stableford, which was won by Margo Fletcher in the first division
and Linda Dixon in the second division. The May Medal was won by
Helen Mills in the first division and by Molly Wainwright in the
second division.

We drew our first ladies friendly match against Vila Sol Away
and had a very enjoyable day. We also enjoyed our games against
Quinta do Lago in the Ben Hogan competition, though the result
was not what we had hoped for!

It was lovely to have Maried Koojmans and Diane Golding back
with us and to welcome three new lady members into our midst; Kelly
Browse, Sally Wingrove and Evelyn Amy. Unfortunately the lady from
Vila Sol who kindly took our photograph cut our heads off, so we
need to take a new team photo at our next match!

Linda Bentley is hosting an Ascot Ladies Day on June the 18th in
order to raise money for the children's homes in Alvor and in
Olhão. We are also looking forward to our Ladies Invitation
Day on May the 27th and we will welcome many ladies from other
local clubs to play with us.

I look forward to seeing many of you this May and June, and wish
you good golfing in the meantime.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

May started with our usual trip to the K-Club, and despite the
rain, we all had a great time thanks to our host and President,
David Markey. Well done to the Immediate Past Captain David Pirret,
who won the Seve Trophy.

The Ben Hogan Trophy was played at Quinta do Lago this year and
won by the home club 24 - 15. Mixed Pairs Matchplay was popular
with 20 teams taking part and was won by our Club Captain and Lady.
The May Medal was won by Barbara Kyne and the May Stableford was
won by Jenny Harrison, while Vitor Madureiro won a trip to the
Azores during the first Portuguese Senior Association South Region
Tournament.

Some of you may have noticed that we finally have a Pinheiros
Altos Clock, courtesy of Blevins Franks and our Club Captain
Stewart Harper... so there'll be no more excuses for turning up
late on the tee!

I look forward to seeing many of you at Captain's Day on the
13th of June, as well as on the 27th of June, for the Hillbillies
Vs Sanddancers challenge.

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

The last month has flown by and winners were as follows. The
division one winner of the Medal was Helen Mills with a nett 72.
Second division was won by Molly Wainwright with a nett 77. Melaura
Parker won the first division Stableford with 37 points and Linda
Bentley won division two with 34 points, well done girls.

We welcomed 54 players from many clubs in the Algarve for our
Invitation Day and the winners were Diana Collins from Pinheiros
and Gaby Roethig from Vila Sol. 800 euros was raised for charity
and I would like to thank everyone who played and showed their
support, especially Past Captain Adrienne Buth for organising the
day so successfully.

On May the 15th, 11 Past Lady Captains played in the annual Past
Captains Day, which Therese Van Doorn won. While, Stewart and I
were delighted to win the Mixed Matchplay knockout. Though we have
enjoyed our Ladies Friendly Matches, they're not going as well as
we would like as we lost both matches this May.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Linda Bentley's
Ascot Day on June the 18th.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

June is normally a quiet month on the Golf Course, however this
year was an exception and we have been really busy with members
events, as well as visitors playing the golf course.

Of course the major event was Captain's Day on 13th June and I
would like to congratulate the Club Captain Stewart Harper &
Lady Captain Cathy Harper on a great day. The support from our Vice
Captain was very much appreciated on the Golf Course as well. The
catering staff, as well as the green staff & all the golf
staff, worked very hard to make it an extremely memorable day for
all. Congratulations to Diana Collins on taking the 2015 Captain's
Prize with 43 points, while Wendy Collins took the best Nett Lady,
Nigel Collins best Nett Men. Dan Henderson & Melaura Parker
took the best gross score of the day for men & ladies
respectively.

A big thank you on behalf of the Club and all the members to our
Club Captain Stewart Harper and Blevins Franks for their donation
of the Pinheiros Altos clock which is now located on the academy
roof visible from the driving range and the 1st tee on Pines.

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

June was yet another busy month and with the Captain's report
and Jenny Harrisons, I apologise if some items are reported
twice!

On June 1st the ladies played a friendly match against Quinta da
Ria (Levante) and we managed to win the match. This was followed by
a very amicable lunch and we are looking forward to the return
match at Quinta da Ria on July 16th. Unfortunately our game against
Benamor had to be postponed as they could not raise a team, but we
are hoping to rearrange the match for some time in September.

Many of our ladies played some excellent golf in June. The First
Division Medal was won by Denise Reed from Leigh Anderson who both
finished with a nett 75, with Denise taking first prize with a
better back 9. Division 2 was won by Diana Collins with a nett 73
from Jan Kirk, nett75.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

July was dominated by the Sunshine Classic Gala week, which was
a huge success and everyone seemed to have enjoyed it. The format
was changed to a three rounds tournament for the team event, which
in the end was won by the lowest handicap combination team Tim
Russell and Rie Cherubini with a two points lead over Graeme and
Fiona Thomson. Congratulations to Tim and Rie on their fantastic
achievement during the week!

Bernadette Hardie and Ryan Luke just swept in to take the best
gross score of the week, winning it on the back nine holes of the
last day over Dan Henderson and Debbie Madgett. Also, for the first
time we had a ladies team in a top five spot of the Gala week, so
well done to Kay and Katie Ford who finished in third place
overall.

The Gala week charity was geared to help the grandson of a
former employee of Pinheiros Altos and we managed to raise €1,000
during the week. A further €2,000 has been collected since through
anonymous donations, and I would like to thank everyone for their
generosity towards such a good cause.

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

The extremely hot weather continued throughout July and the
result of this was that slightly fewer ladies played in the weekly
competitions. The first division medal was won by Leigh Anderson
with a nett 70 and second division was won by Pat Murrish with a
nett 75. The July Stableford was won by Hilary Jessop with 36
points and second division by Shirley Griffiths with 35 points.
Well done ladies.

At the beginning of July, Sue and Andy Georges organised a very
successful trip to Royal Obidos, where we stayed in a very pleasant
hotel. The course was a challenge but everyone enjoyed the outing
and I would like to thank Sue and Andy for their excellent
organisation.

On July the 16th, the ladies team enjoyed their match against
Levante, playing Quinta da Ria, the prettier of the two courses
there. When the golf became difficult, at least we could enjoy the
lovely views. Their team treated us to an excellent lunch and we
returned home happy with the result, which was a friendly draw.

From the Captain...

Monthly Report

In my last report I indicated that August is the time to "catch
your breath." So much so that Christophe was able to take a longer
than normal break which was well deserved and even Sesinando was
away and able to avoid me! I will report on the course in my other
report, but even the Lady Captain and I escaped for a few days to
Evora where we enjoyed a change of atmosphere and some wine
tasting!

Indeed wine and club improvements and social activities are in my
main plans this month! We are very near to negotiating an agreement
with the owners through the Dona Filipa Hotel for a "members" wine
which will only be available from the bar and restaurant to members
at a special price. That price will be at a considerable discount!
Quite a deal if we pull it off. The wine is coming from Herdade Das
Servas which is north of Evora and Cathy and I visited it to see if
it was as good as it seems. We think it is! Their wines have won
over 30 international awards in the last few years and those of us
who have tasted the wines believe they show a considerable
improvement over the present choice. It is of course a very
personal thing and members are always free to choose any wine which
is available within the
club. There are a few small issues to tie up, but Christophe and I
hope by next month we will be organised.

<a

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

Following the fun and entertainment of Gala week, August has
been very quiet. Many lady members were either back in their home
countries or elsewhere on holiday. As a result of this, we only had
9 ladies playing in the monthly Medal, 12 in the fun competition,
and another 9 in the monthly stableford. Twenty two of us went to
San Lorenzo on August 26th and enjoyed a reduction only competition
there. It was a lovely morning and everyone enjoyed playing a
different course but sadly their enjoyment was not reflected in the
majority of the scores! Sue George's won with a great score of 41
points and Therese Van Doorn was the runner up with 33 points! The
rest of us just had a good time!

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

September saw the usual Match Play Championship and
congratulations go to David Light and Sue Georges.

On the 6th of September, we had President's Day and Senior
Championship, which were the best supported events to-date with 80
players. It was a very enjoyable day followed by a lunch in the
Clubhouse. Sergey Naumov was the big champion on the day by winning
the President's Prize while Kelvin White is the new Pinheiros Altos
Senior Champion 2015. Congratulations to both of them!

Both the Monthly Stableford and the September Medal were won by
Zoe Pirret.

Autumn Medal Rosebowl and the highly anticipated Wooden Spoon
are coming up; I wish all of you a very good October on the golf
course!

Cathy Harper

For me, September was going to be mainly about my Captains Day.
We had seen no rain for five months but when the day dawned, I was
awoken to grey skies and a very serious possibility of showers.
However well you plan something, you can never rely on the weather,
as I found out!

My disappointment was overcome by the attitude of all the
ladies, none of whom cancelled and were all cheerful in spite of
the soaking, which they got at around 10am. Thanks to my husband
Stewart and Iain Cater who were on-hand to offer Bucks Fizz and
Pastéis de Nata.

I was surprised by the scores on such a dismal day. The overall
winner being Sue Georges with 39 points, well done Sue.

In Division 1, Denise Reed was first with 37 points and Hilary
Jessup second with 36, Melody Cotterill took first prize in
Division 2 and Pat Murrish second prize. The Nearest the Pin prizes
were won by Mai Markey and Marian Hill.

The August medal was won by Therese van Doorn in Division 1 and
by Josie Waddinton in Division 2.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

October has been the busiest month we have had for many years on
the golf course, and unfortunately pace of play was an issue on
some occasions. Fortunately for the membership, the six hours of
exclusive starting times allowed for some buffer zones and managed
to avoid the five hour rounds on most days!

October saw the Wooden Spoon being handed to the men for the
third year in a row. Congratulations to the Ladies, who will
probably see their handicap allocation reduced to ¾ for next
year!

On the 7th of October we had the Pink Day and it raised the
impressive amount of €5,136, which was higher than what was
announced on the day as fortunately we received some further
donations after the tournament. A big thank you to all participants
and especially Shirley Griffiths for organising the day.

The October Stableford was won by Knut Ellingsen, who seems to
be in very good form lately. On two occasions we tried to play the
Autumn Medal Rosebowl but unfortunately the weather would not allow
it; it has been re-scheduled for the 15th of November, which I hope
will be a better day for it.

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

October was a month of mixed fortunes weather-wise; we
experienced some glorious days but also some gloriously wet days
too.

The first competition of the month was 'Pink Day'. Shirley
Griffiths, as ever, had worked extremely hard to make the day a
success and it was. There were more players than in previous years
and more money was raised - well done Shirley and thank you.

The Wooden Spoon competition took place on the 9th of October. I
was not looking forward to receiving the spoon from my husband, and
fortunately I didn't have to. My team played really well and
defeated the men 10 - 6. Well done ladies.

Our October Medal was won by Dee Garvin in Division 1 with a
nett 73 and by Vera Watkins in Division 2 with a nett 77.

On Friday the 16th of October, we held a morning fun competition
followed by the Annual Dinner in the evening. The competition was
played over two different courses and was won by Sue Georges and
Fiona Hanby, and Janet Leffler and Paula Burke Hickey.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

November saw the usual Foursomes Championship played over two
days; congratulations go to Declan Quilligan and Rie Cherubini on
becoming the new champions with a score of 149 nett. Tim and Susan
Russell won the Gross after having fought for the title up to the
last green. Congratulations also go to Thérèse Van Doorn who won
the Autumn Medal Rosebowl with a score of 71, and Robert Lester,
who was successful in the St Andrews Stableford with a score of 34
points.

I must apologize for not mentioning it in the last newsletter,
as we had one of our very dear members of the club pass away on 9th
October 2015, Mr. Doug Golding. We will miss him dearly in the club
and I would like to send my sentiment to his wife Diane and
family.

In early December, we hosted two Pro Tournaments from the
Portugal Algarve Pro Tour, which has started this year and will be
building up over the years to come. We had 40 players and Sam
Robertshaw won the first edition with 7 under par in two rounds,
while Ryan Boyns won the second edition with 9 under par in two
rounds. We are looking to develop tournaments with the Portugal
Algarve Pro Tour for next year including Pro Ams, which will be
open at a special rate for Pinheiros Altos members.

At the beginning of November, we played our last Ladies Friendly
of the year against Laranjal. The conditions were difficult as many
of the bunkers were flooded, but we remained dry in our defeat! We
look forward to playing them at Pinheiros Altos next year and
hopefully, reversing the result.

The Foursomes Championship was played a week later. There was a
good entry with the worthy winners being Declan Quilligan and Rie
Cherubini, who managed to beat Tim and Susan Russell in a closely
fought competition. There was only one all-lady team and
congratulations must go to Meg Black and Melody Cotterill for
winning a prize with an excellent score on the second day.

Stewart and I should have played three charity challenges this
month but two have had to be rescheduled and we look forward to
playing them before Christmas. We did play against John and Molly
Wainwright, who played amazingly well over the front nine. We had
to work hard to pull back the score for a close win. Thanks to the
Wainwrights for giving us a good game and an enjoyable morning
golf.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

December 2015 was a busy month with many Christmas competitions.
I would like to thank Ross, Kenny and Roger for running the Turkey
Flutter and the Boxing Day event, as well as running the roll ups.
I would also like to thank Cristina for running the office, which
allowed me to take some time off with the family over
Christmas.

New Year's Day Scramble was a very special one this year with a
record 160 players. The "Brian Evans New Year Scramble Trophy" was
presented to the winning team; David Adamson, Andrew Adamson, Mark
Adamson, Constantin Schmidt and Ali Scott with a score of -10.

The 4th Algarvian Invitational will be taking place between the
17th and 23rd January and there is already a field of 103 players
confirmed. While our main event in February will be the St
Valentine's Trophy, which will be played over two days; one round
at Pinheiros Altos and the other round at San Lorenzo.

I am delighted that David Ford has accepted to be the candidate
nominated by the committee to be the future Vice-Captain as from
the next A.G.M, while Zoe Pirret will be the Lady Vice-Captain. I
am sure that both of them will be a great credit to the Golf
Committee and I look forward to being able to work with them in
developing the golf club over the next few years.

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

Firstly a Happy New Year to all. It was good to see so many
ladies over the Christmas period and enjoy some fun golf with you
all. Our Christmas competition on December 16th was a great success
with all the ladies entering into the spirit of the competition. We
played in festive red or green; the red team, led by myself, won,
while Linda Bentley won the prize for the best outfit.

The December medals were won by Cathy Harper in Division One and
Lisa Burns in Division Two. While, the Stablefords were won by
Hilary Jessup in Division One and Vera Watkins in Division Two.

The Turkey Flutter on December 20th was rained off, but the
lunch was enjoyed by all; especially those who won the prizes on a
card draw. It is impossible to reschedule when rains stops play in
a competition so close to Christmas.

The Boxing Day American Foursomes was great fun, although too
early a start for some, but New Year's Day saw 160 players turn out
to "Scramble" round the course. Well done to the winners, who had a
rookie in their team with Alexandra Scott playing in her first ever
competition.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

The highlight of January 2016 after the New Year's Day Scramble
was the fourth Algarvian Invitational Senior Tournament. Simon won
the €7,000 prize money with a score of 13 under par for the four
day tournament...even with Juan Quiroz shooting 65 on his closing
round to tie in second place at 12 under par with Paul Wesselingh.
The tournament was a great success with 105 players, 80 of which
were professionals, and would not have been possible without
support from the joint-sponsors John Waters and Denis O'Brian.

Prior to the Algarvian Invitational, we also organized the first
Algarvian Charity Pro Am in Partnership with Quinta do Lago, San
Lorenzo and Dona Filipa hotel. The winners were James Murphy's team
with Eric McNichol, Blake Norton and Sam Prince as his three
amateurs. They scored 34 under par for the four days, while the
individual Pro score was won by Simon Brown for shooting four under
par.

On a personal note I would like to thank all my staff involved
in organizing the tournament and especially the Greens Staff with
the help of the Greens Committee. They have made a tremendous
effort to recover the golf course and presented it in a fantastic
condition.

Winter Medal was won by Fiona Thomson with a score of 71, while
the January Stableford was won by Melody Cotterill with a score of
40 points. Congratulations to both ladies on their win!

I wish you all a great start to the Golf Season and look forward
to seeing many of our members during the Easter break!

Ladies Section

Cathy Harper

January has flown by and the ladies competitions have been well
attended for the time of year - excellent weather conditions
helping to bring out the fair weather golfers. We also welcomed
Amanda Stretton as a new member and she has already featured in the
winning teams in both January 'fun' competitions!

Our January Medal competition was won in Division One by Zoe
Pirret with a good score of 76 nett. Well done Zoe, especially as
her handicap had just been reduced at the annual review. The same
for Melody Cotterill whose handicap had also been cut, and she won
Division Two with a nett 75. Susan Russell won the Division One
Stableford with an excellent score of 39 points, while Yvonne White
won Division Two with 29 points. Well done ladies.

The Algarvian Invitational Seniors took place over four days in
the middle of January and I'd like to congratulate all those who
took part, as well as Christophe and all the staff who worked so
hard to make the event a success.

On March 9th we will be holding a charity sale of second-hand
handbags, belts, scarves, shoes, and first-hand cakes! The sale
will take place in the Clubhouse after the Lady Captain verses the
Lady Vice, and will start at about 12.30. All the monies raised
will go to the children's homes in Olhao and Alvor. I look forward
to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Happy golfing to you all throughout February.

Introduction from the Captain

by Mr Stewart Harper

This is my last report as your Captain and I am sure you will
warmly welcome your new Captain, Knut Pedersen, who takes over at
the AGM on 24th March.

I hope members will file any questions relating to the club, well
in time for the AGM and for Christophe to prepare his replies. I
can confirm that at my invitation Ruben Paula the new COO of JJW
Portugal has agreed to make a statement at the AGM and to answer
questions relating to the future plans for the club's development.
This is, I believe, a first for JJW and I hope bodes well.

As previously reported, Ruben is highly qualified and experienced
in managing both hotels and resorts. I am optimistic that real
changes may be in our sight with his backing.

Members will see that the work to the new extension in the
dining area has commenced and the contractors have promised to
complete their work before the AGM. This reflects well on the new
regime as I made it clear that in my year I wanted to see some
evidence of new investment - a sentiment that I am sure
Christophe shares!

The course still needs to improve, to present itself in a better
light. I can confirm the company has appointed a gardener to keep
the area around the club house and access to paths in better
condition. I hope we will see the improvements very quickly.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

July was all about the Sunshine Classic Gala Week, which was a
great success. It had the best entry for over 10 years, with 45
teams and additional members taking part in the individual events.
The very popular winners were Karl and Jordan Markey -
congratulations to them on a fantastic win!

The Gala Week raised over €8,000 for charity! Congratulations to
both Captains and especially all the hard work our Lady Captain has
put in to secure such a great amount for the two nominated
charities; the Lions Club Loulé and the Portuguese Salvation
Army.

On the Wednesday of the Gala Week, we had our usual fancy dress
shoot out and this year's theme was 'Disney'. Everyone made a real
effort to come dressed-up and made the day a huge success. The
theme was perfect to attract more families and children to take
part in the festivities. It was great to see families back in
Pinheiros Altos, and it was, without a doubt, the most family
orientated shoot out we had had for many years.

On the Sunday, we had a Flag Competition and Bernie Barrett was
the only player who managed to play to the 18th green, and won the
practice round. Not bad considering she had not played for over a
year!

Mai Markey

Summer is in full swing (pardon the pun) and the temperatures
are high. As always, our July Medal was played on the first
Wednesday of the month. A good field in 1st Division but only two
in 2nd Division. Many thanks to Pat Murrish for allowing the Lady
Captain to win her 3rd Medal Glass (Pat doesn't need any more… she
already has 12)!

On the 13th, we played a team game, which was one to score on
the par 5's, two on par 4 's and all on par 3's, which everyone
enjoyed. Our friendly team played in Quinta da Ria on the Thursday,
but alas we were beaten by the hosts. It was an early start for our
team but a great day was had by all.

The following week we played the Monthly Stableford and the
winner of the Casa da Quinta voucher this month was Christine
Soden, with an amazing score of 41 Pts....well done Chris! On the
20th, our friendly with Vila Sol resulted in a very fair all
square. They were a lovely group of ladies and we all had a great
day.

As always, towards the end of July we had Gala Week. It was
great fun both on and off the golf course. Everyone embraced the
Disney theme. I would like to thank all the staff at P.A. for
making the week such a success. Our Charity Auction raised in
excess of 8,000€. A big thank you to all the members who donated
their home clubs and all the successful bidders.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

As expected, August was very calm, and gave us time to reflect
on the Sunshine Classic Members Gala Week, which was a great
success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the
players who took part and made it such an enjoyable week for all,
with one of the biggest entries for 10 years.

On 2th August, we had our annual Junior Open with 25 juniors
taking part in a great day organized by our Pro Peter Ashdown. The
event was sponsored by Mr. Malcolm Helder, and there was also
assistance from past Captains and members on the day. The Champion
was Alexandre Castelo - congratulations to him!

Autumn will be busier as the golf season is now underway - a
particularly important event will be Pink Day on 5th October. It
will be open as it was such a success last year and a great cause
to support. We are hoping to raise over €5,000 to exceed last
year's achievements.

Ladies Section

Mai Markey

August is always a quiet month at Pinheiros Altos, as the
temperatures go up and families come to visit. We started it with a
Medal round on 3rd August - many congratulations to the winners
Denise Reed and Wendy Evans! Meanwhile, our monthly Stableford was
won by Melody Cotterill, who was awarded the Casa da Quinta
voucher.

On the following Wednesday, I decided to add a fun team
competition - Portuguese Caddy. We had teams of four with two to
count and we all adjourned to the terrace for nibbles and drinks.
The ladies present all raised their glass in fond memory of Paul
Dixon... a fun loving man, who will be sadly missed by us all at
PA. Our thoughts are with Linda and family at this time.

The highlight of August was our Away Day at Palmares on the last
Wednesday of the month, which was a great success. The course is
well worth a visit and scoring was high. Luncheon on the beach
followed and a good day was had by all!

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

Firstly, I would like to wish Rui Tomé well - he has been
working with us in our catering department for over 15 years, but
is no longer with the company. I would like to thank him for all
his input over the years.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new
manager, Renato Vairinhos, who will be starting on the 15th of
October 2016, and wish him well with his new challenge.

I'd like to congratulate the Captain on winning the Hillbillies
Vs Sanddancers Trophy for the Hillbillies! While our ACCA Pro-Am
raised over €10,000 for a very worthy cause on the 15th of
September. Thanks to everyone who participated for their support -
the winners of the day were our home pro Kenny Fairbairn and former
PA pro Eddie Charnock. They both achieved a score of 71… and Kenny
and his team also went on to win the team event!

We hosted our President's Day and the Senior Championship on the
18th of September, which was well supported with 80 players. It was
a very enjoyable day that was followed by a lunch in the clubhouse,
which was largely sponsored by the President Mr. David Markey.
Rosie Agnew won the President's Prize and became the new Pinheiros
Altos Senior Champion 2016. Congratulations Rosie!

Mai Markey

September's fun started with the Hillbillies Vs Sanddancers ...
many congratulations to Knut and his team on a great win. While our
Medal on the 7th of September was won by 1st Chie Crowdey and 2nd
Wendy Evans ...both having a 73 nett.

We had the Matchplay Championships on the weekend of the 9th,
and Sue Georges beat Hilary Jessup in the final on Sunday. We
played 666 on the 14th of September; teams of four with two to
score on the first six, then three on the next and the final six
all to score. It made it challenging, but everyone enjoyed the fun
day.

A wonderful score at the monthly Stableford from Barbara
Fletcher made her the outright winner of the Casa Da Quinta
voucher. However, September was also the month for friendlies and
we had four to play! Thank you to everyone who played our home and
away games.

We had our charity day on the 27th and raised over 1,000 euro.
Card making followed by afternoon tea was a great success. The
money raised is going directly towards school books for children in
the local area. Many thanks to Amanda, her sister Alison and
everyone who sponsored, baked, served and helped make the day such
a success.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

I would like to thank the Club Captain, Knut Pedersen, for his
kind words on the massive loss that Linda Bentley is to our Club.
She was the spirit of any party we held at the Club and we will
miss her dearly. Linda, wherever you are, I am sure the dance floor
will be all yours.

On behalf of all the staff at Pinheiros Altos, our most sincere
condolences to Alan.

October has been the busiest month we have had for many years on
the golf course. On 5th October we had Pink Day, which raised the
very good amount of €5,550. Thank you to all the sponsors, Shirley
Griffiths for her important input and all the members who supported
the event and the charity.

The Wooden Spoon has been handed to the men for the fourth year
in a row. I think our Captain Knut was expecting it, as with Mai
Markey as the Lady Captain and Zoe as the Lady Vice Captain, he was
fighting a very competitive pair who would do anything to win!

The October Stableford was won by Steven Crowdey and the Autumn
Rosebowl saw Melody Cotterill winning the trophy.

As we go to press, I have lost a true friend. Linda Bentley has
passed away after a short illness. She will be sadly missed by us
all at Pinheiros Altos. She is now dancing with the angels in
Heaven. Rest in peace Linda, hugs and kisses.

The Ryder Cup weekend at PA was a great success and having a win
for Europe made the Sunday a celebration for all on the team. Many
thanks to Melaura for all her work and signage throughout the
course.

Our first Wednesday was Pink Day, which raised over 5,500€ for
the oncology department in Faro. Well done to everyone for your
support. Many thanks to the organising committee of Shirley, our
Director Christophe and Mr President DM.

The Wooden Spoon was one of the highlights of my captaincy, as
it gave me great pleasure to hand over the spoon to Knut. The two
Knuts beat Rie and I in our match, thankfully not a dog license
(they both dovetailed very well together), but we still had fun.
Knut came back down to earth very quickly, as the ladies worked
hard to get the right result. Everyone stayed on the terrace
supporting the teams coming in and great atmosphere followed in the
dining room.

Monthly Report

November saw the usual Foursomes Championship played over two
days and congratulations go to Paul and Meg Black on becoming the
new champions with a score of 150 net. Tony and Paula Hickey won
the Gross. Congratulations to all participants for taking part in
what is the most difficult format of golf.

Stella Jeffrey won the November Medal, while Steven Crowdey
managed to beat Stella on the back nine holes in the St Andrew's
Stableford, which was also our Memorial Members Day. We also hosted
two Pro Tournaments as part of the Portugal Algarve Pro Tour in
early December; we had 60 players playing in some very wet weather,
but all were very impressed on how well the course presented even
with very difficult weather conditions.

The Christmas board is now up in the clubhouse for all to sign
in for the many forthcoming events. I hope to see as many of you as
possible at these competitions and social activities.

On behalf of all the staff at Pinheiros Altos I would like to
wish all the members and their families a very Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year!

The Medal was played on the 2nd of November... Zoe kindly looked
after the day as I was home for a short visit and she played so
well she won the Medal Glass in the 1st Division… well done! We won
our mixed friendly with Benamor at home on the Saturday, while the
Stableford competition was won by Kay Ford.

As a mark of respect of the passing of our esteemed member Linda
Bentley, we cancelled our team event on the 23rd.

On the last Wednesday, we had a team competition called 'String'
as we all needed cheering up after the passing of Linda. Everyone
had fun and we celebrated Linda's life with pizza and a glass of
rose. The Friday girls have bought a star in her name - thank you
to Yvonne for organising it. May Linda rest in peace.

Christmas is on its way and the clubhouse is looking very
Christmassy. A big thank you to Angela Roberts who kindly organised
all the Poinsettia's around the club.

Director of Golf

Monthly Report

December 2016 was a busy month in the calendar with many
Christmas competitions. I would like to thank Ross, Kenny and Roger
for running the Turkey Flutter, the Boxing Day and the Roll Ups...
and Cristina for running the office, which allowed me to take some
time off with the family over Christmas.

The Turkey Flutter was won by our new member Andy Wheeler, who
had a score of 39 points, while Boxing Day was won by Kay and Rhys
Ford with a score of 37 points (BB9). Ross Sutherland and Robert
Moss won the Pro Prize with a great score of 38 points.

The Eclectic Competition sponsored by Florida Golf (thanks to
Chris Hales) was won for the men by Tim Russell with a score of 66,
and by Sally Evans for the ladies with a score of 67. The nett
prize for the Eclectic for the men was won by Alberto Nicoletti
with a score of 55, while Stella Jeffrey won for the ladies with a
score of 57 tied with Sue Georges, but better back two holes.

Ladies Section

Mai Markey

On the first Wednesday of December, we played a combination of
the Medal and the Wainwright Trophy.

Unfortunately the rain came on the 14th, so we cancelled our Elf
Christmas Challenge and adjourned to Susan Russell's home for
luncheon and some bubbles. Paul Cotterill and Barbara Fletcher
kindly prepared a wonderful selection of fare, followed by mince
pies from Zoe and Stollen from Lisa. Cathy followed up with coffees
and chocolates, kindly given by Melaura. A special thanks to Santa
for coming as we all know how busy he can be at that time of
year...

The Stableford and more Wainwright matches were played on the
21st December, while the winner of the Casa da Quinta voucher for
this month was Molly Wainwright.

Zoe was delighted to announce her Lady Vice for 2017 - Lisa
Burns, who has accepted the role and we all wish her well.

Farewell from Director of Golf - Brian
Evans

The 31st of July 2013 was my final day as Director of Golf at
Pinheiros Altos... and this will be my final report for the
newsletter - my 112th since its introduction in May 2004 by the
then Captain, Mr. Bill Copestake.

I am stepping down as Director of Golf happy in the knowledge
that Christophe Rindlisbacher, my right hand man for many years,
will take over from me. He has become a great friend of mine and
has been a pleasure to work with... and I know that he is ready to
take Pinheiros Altos forward. I will still be around though and
will now be overseeing the golf course's development - something
that has always been my passion.

The Best Members Club in Portugal

I believe that Pinheiros Altos is the best members club in
Portugal and I am sure it will go from strength to strength under
the new structure. I know that Christophe, Cristina, Sesinando and
all the golf staff will continue to do everything they can to
provide the members with the high standard that they expect and
deserve.

Pinheiros Altos still has tremendous potential and I know that
many exciting things will be taking place over the coming months...
including the strengthening of the relationship between Pinheiros
Altos and San Lorenzo, which will have a great benefit for all
members.

It was great to round off my time at Pinheiros Altos with an
excellent Sunshine Classic Gala Week. It included one of the very
best Charity Shootouts, fancy dress performances, two superb meals
thanks to Chef Nuno, and some stunning golf from the winners Daniel
Waters and Mark Altmann.

I must thank the Pinheiros Altos members for their
encouragement, support and friendship. Of course, it would not be a
golf club if everyone was a friend of the Director of Golf; but I
would like to think I have a few!

It only remains for me to wish you all good health and good
golfing, and to wish Christophe and his team the very best for the
future development of Pinheiros Altos.

In Memory of David Grove

It is with great sadness that
we announce the unexpected passing of one of our members - Mr David
Grove. (pictured, with his wife, Jane Grove).

Those who knew David will know how
much he enjoyed his time in the Algarve and how fond he was of
playing golf at Pinheiros Altos - especially the par 3 across the
lake at the 8th on Olives Course.

In 2009, David, who lived in
Stratford-upon-Avon, England, was awarded the OBE in recognition of
his work in running a host of large manufacturing businesses. His
speciality was turning around the fortunes of struggling companies,
invigorating the management and staff, striving for innovation and
quality and rewarding success.

Over the years he achieved more
than most could even dream of, and the business that bears his
name, Grove Industries, currently owns 12 companies, employs 1,500
people and has a combined turnover of £300 million. Furthermore,
David was the High Sheriff of the West Midlands at the time of his
passing.

A champion of British industry -
especially in the Midlands - David lobbied hard to ensure
manufacturing skills were retained for future generations and
campaigned tirelessly for these ideals whilst serving as President
of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. But it wasn't just business
that drove him forward. When possible, David travelled the world as
a member of England's "Barmy Army" cricket fans, kept up with the
rugby at Twickenham and was an avid follower of West Bromwich
Albion Football Club.

And then there was golf, a sport
David relished in sharing with some of the other great loves of his
life: family and friends. Pinheiros Altos Golf Course was his
favourite course and he enjoyed many rounds here with his two sons,
Simon and Jonathon - as well as his wife, Jane. Ever one for
generosity, David would bring many of his friends out to the
Algarve on golf tours, organising Ryder Cup style tournaments as a
bit of 'friendly' competition.

To honour David's memory, and at
the request of his family - knowing how much Pinheiros Altos Golf
Course meant to him - a memorial bench will be placed on his
favourite hole, the 8th on Olives, to remind us of this great loss
and to treasure his memory and the love he had for the golf
course.

He was a great character, a
pleasure to be around, and has left behind a legacy that will go on
to enrich the lives of thousands for many years to come. He will,
unquestionably, be sadly missed by everyone at Pinheiros Altos Golf
Course and all those whose lives he touched.

We bid you heartfelt
farewell, David. May you rest in peace and your memory forever be
remembered.

Overseas Golfing Challenges for Pinheiros Altos Members

While the Algarve is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful
places in which to play golf, there came a time this summer when
cooler climes were craved. For this reason, 46 of our members
ventured overseas to the staggering Loch Lomond Golf Club with its
7,100 yard parkland and Highland backdrop. The members were
welcomed with a 'wee dram' which set the tone for a long weekend of
Scottish hospitality.

Before long it was time to get down to business with the
Pinheiros Altos Loch Lomond Challenge. This was the first
competition of its kind for several years so some of the members
took part in a social game initially in order to familiarise
themselves with the course. The main event was an individual
Stableford with a specially designed and engraved plate the prize.
Susan Russell was victorious with a wonderful 37 points. Susan was
the only player to break par, making her a truly deserved
winner.

The month was very British indeed with the annual Gents'
challenge against the Cotswold Hills Golf Club. The event has been
running for eight years now, and over that time many a great
friendship has been forged. A 3-3 draw was the order of the day and
the club were kind enough to host a light lunch and presentation
ceremony afterwards. Our Lady Captain Rie Cherubini hosted an
alternative social for the women, and it was thoroughly
enjoyed.

Changes and Refurbishments Afoot at Pinheiros Altos

Things are looking good back at home too, with the academy area
anticipating an upgrade. The teaching bays will be updated, the
tees improved and the wooden hut transformed into a treatment room.
The 7th Green on Olives will also be rebuilt in the coming months,
and it is expected that things will be finished in time for the New
Year. The offices have also undergone some changes, and the Golf
Club office and the Director of Golf's office are now located next
to the Golf shop.

target="_blank">A Month of Competition at Pinheiros Altos

It has been a busy and competitive month at Pinheiros
Altos with plenty of matches taking place. The Individual
Matchplay Championships had an extraordinarily large number of
entrants, meaning that we implemented a medal round for both the
Ladies and the Gents. Wendy Collins and Declan Quillan were
victorious, and we all extend hearty congratulations to them. Then
there was the Ladies' Invitation Day, which took place on the 4th
with an impressive 50 participants. Conditions were tough, meaning
that Ladies' Captain Rie Cherubini was particularly happy to
announce Adrienne Buth and Natalie Lisboa as deserved winners.

Charity Events at Pinheiros

In mid-September Pinheiros Altos hosted the annual International
Ronald Mcdonald Charity event which saw a wonderful 320 people
taking part. Thanks to the organisers and those who took part, we
raised over €250,000 for the charity. In other charity news - we
were very pleased to hear that José Gabriel, a swimmer from the
Loulé Disabled Swimming Team, has won a number of European titles
for breaststoke.

Social Golf and Events

Molly Wainwright, head of Social Golf, is keen to remind all of
some exciting events coming up. We will hold a Texas Scramble on
the 20th October, and a joint competition with Quinta do Lago on
the 24th November. All Members are very much encouraged and welcome
to join in which these activities. This also an opportunity to
remind you all that on St. Andrew's Day, The Celts will be
challenging the English along with the rest of the world to a match
in commemoration of the 700th anniversary of the Battle of
Bannockburn. Golf will be followed by dinner and entertainment from
Ceilidhdonia, a well-known Scottish ceilidh band.

Finally, the Green on 7th on Olives is now undergoing re-design.
You may have noticed that we have established a temporary
replacement for it. We are anticipating that the re-opening of the
Green will take place on the 1st January 2014.

A Wooden Spoon For the Gents this Month at Pinheiros Altos

While there have been lots of things going on at Pinheiros Altos
this month, I think we can all agree that the main topic of
conversation has been concerning a certain Wooden Spoon. This
"prize" was presented to the gents this year by a very pleased
Ladies' Section. Rie Cherubini, our Ladies' Captain, was,
deservedly, ecstatic that the women won 8 and drew 5 of the 18
matches that took place. The competition results left the Ladies in
high spirits for the rest of the month, which was very eventful
indeed.

Social and Charity Events for the Ladies

The Ladies also held a very successful Pink Day on the 2nd. 24
people played on the day, and each was dressed in a rather fetching
shade of pink. The day was in aid of the AOA (Algarve Oncology
Association) charity, which offers support social and human to
oncology patients in the Algarve. Over €1,400 were raised on the
day, and Shirley Griffiths, the sponsor, was so happy with how it
went that she wrote us all a personal thank you email. After this,
there was the Ladies' Annual Dinner with a prize-giving for the
Eclectic competition. The finale to this very busy month was the
Halloween special, which saw the ladies play a tricky 6-6-6 before
going back to the Clubhouse dressed in spooky costumes to enjoy an
incredible Halloween cake created by our very own Vera Martins.

Things haven't been quiet for the gents either, who played in a
thrilling Autumn Rosebowl. The victor was Graham Lee, and a very
deserved winner he was. We also saw two hole-in-ones achieved at
the Mens' Roll-Ups: one by Graeme Thomson and one by Sergey Naumov.
There are plenty of tournaments coming up for all, so more will
have a chance to achieve something similar in the coming
months.

One last note - look out for sign-up sheets for New Year's,
Christmas and Valentine's events as we have many exciting things

target="_blank">A Beautiful Autumn For Golf Competitions at
Pinheiros Altos

The Foursomes Championship was won by our very own Club Captain,
Mr. Graeme Thomson, and his wife, Fiona. They ultimately finished
one point ahead of Philip and Nancy Schofield, so it was a very
close match indeed. This was followed by our social with Quinta do
Lago on the 24th of November. This have become a very popular
event, and the members over at Quinta were all very keen to
compliment our club and course while they were here.

St. Andrew's Day Challenge

The much-anticipated St. Andrew's Day event also took place in
November, and what an event it was! This challenge saw the Celts
pitted against a team of English and "Rest of the World" players.
Overall, we had 80 golfers, and even more attended in the evening.
It was a glorious, sunny day that was made even more enjoyable by
the 'Lone Piper' who was playing his bagpipes around the course.
The celebrations afterwards were enjoyed by all, and the tartan
theme was whole-heartedly embraced by everyone, including Jorge and
his team.

Christmas and New Year and Pinheiros Altos

Now everyone is looking forward to Christmas and New Year and
all of the events we have planned. Of course, we are very excited
about the New Year's Eve party, which will have a black and pink
tie theme and will include a dinner and live music, but this isn't
the only thing going on. There will also be a New Year's Day
Scramble, during which we hope to unveil the brand new Green on the
7th Olives.

Make sure to check the boards by the Golf Office to sign up for
these events and more. That will be all from us until next year, so
from all of us here at Pinheiros Altos - have a very Merry
Christmas.

Pinheiros Altos Golf Club President to Step Down

by the Director of Golf

Dear Members, it is with considerable disappointment that I am
writing to inform you of Mr Walter Dickson's recent decision to
step down from his role as Club President.

Walter was the first official Captain of the Club in 1999, which
created the stepping stone to the Club we have today. He became
President of Pinheiros Altos Golf Club in 2000 until 2003 and then
stood for a second term as President of the Club in 2007 until
now.

For a decade and more his steady hand and guidance have been
invaluable.

Walter has been a great support for the Members - in a not
always easy environment of propriety owned Golf Club - and has
always been a master at keeping the balance between the Members
Club and the Company. The Membership owe a lot to Walter's input
within the Pinheiros Altos Club and his experience and knowledge
will be missed on the Committee.

We send our best wishes and appreciation to Walter for his
considerable contribution to our club.

New President for 2014

Looking ahead... I have the pleasure to announce that the
immediate past Captain, Mr David Markey, has agreed to stand for
the Presidency of Pinheiros Altos Golf Club for a mandate of 3
years from the time of this publication until the 2017 AGM.

David joined Pinheiros Altos in 2004 and has been a great
supporter of the Pinheiros Altos Golf Club ever since.

He became Vice-captain to John Linley in 2011 and the Club
Captain at the AGM of 2012.

I have no doubt that David will be exceptional in the position
of President and will maintain the right balance between the Club
and the Company.

New Vice-Captain for 2014

I am also delighted to announce that Stewart Harper has accepted
your committee's invitation to become David Pirret's Vice-Captain
at the 2014 AGM. Stewart was a little hesitant with his acceptance
as the appointment coincides with his wife Cathy also being the
incoming Lady Vice Captain for 2014

This introduces the prospect of a notable first for Pinheiros in
2015, as husband and wife become respective Club & Lady
Captains.

I am sure they will both be a credit to our Golf Committee and
wish them every success with their new roles and participation in
the continuing development of our Club

Introduction from the Captain - Mr. Graeme
Thomson

A guid New Year tae yin an' aw......

"Seasonal preparations at Pinheiros began in earnest at the
social golf on Sunday 8th December when with the help of Keith
Fletcher and some other PA choir members (who also have the X
factor), we were treated to a wonderful festive performance from
'The San Lourenzo Singers'... and given their success we very much
hope there will be an encore in the not too distant future!

This also provided the ideal opportunity for our membership to
focus their efforts in support of 'The Angels Programme', which as
many of you will know is an annual initiative organised by ACCA,
and coordinated by Jenny Harrison to ensure that children in care
receive a gift at Christmas. A very worthy cause and one which is
having to deal with an ever-increasing need!"

The Brian Evans New Year Scramble Trophy

Director of Golf - Monthly Report

"The New Year's Day Scramble was a very special one this year
with 135 players on the day and a presentation to acknowledge Brian
Evans' 19 years as our Director of Golf. The presentation was a
great success and surely one Brian will remember.

I would like to thank all the members for their support, in
particular Alan Bentley for producing the new version of "The Life
of Brian". The Trophy is now the "Brian Evans New Year Scramble
Trophy" and was presented by Brian Evans to the winning team of
Terry & Sandra Little, John Parsons, Cyril & Hilary
Forde."
